About the Karoo Escape Hike

Karoo Escape is a 3 Days / 4 Nights adventure designed for those seeking a shorter Karoo experience that only covers round 15 km each day. It offers a refreshing balance between art, history, adventure and leisure while experiencing local culinary tastes.

You can set your own pace during the walk, making it ideal for both seasoned hikers and those looking for a relaxed journey, which leaves your afternoons free to explore the picturesque village of Nieu-Bethesda.

Nestled beneath the Sneeuberg mountain range, Nieu-Bethesda invites you to wander its charming streets, and discover its rich history. Highlights include visits to the Helen Martins museum, Infinity Art Gallery, the Bushman Heritage Museum, and the captivating “Stone Folk of Ongeluksloot,” a permanent art installation.

Designed for people with limited time, this hike is perfect for a long weekend escape. You will be staying at Riad Maroc Nieu-Bethesda, for 4 nights.

As part of the 3 day Karoo Escape hike, you’ll explore the stunning Ganora Canyon, located on a private working farm rich in both natural and cultural history. This unique site offers access to a private fossil collection, ancient Bushman rock art, and remnants from the Anglo Boer War, allowing you to experience “250 million years of history in a single day”.

This hike will also take you over the scenic Witnek Pass, providing breathtaking elevated views. Nieu-Bethesda has a famous natural spring, which is responsible for the village’s ever-flowing water furrow that has never run dry, which you will get the chance to explore during the Water Furrow Walk.

Carrying only a day pack with water, breakfast, and lunch, this hike allows you to travel light and enjoy the scenery without the stress of heavy gear. Keep in mind that medical assistance is 60km away, and cell phone reception is limited, allowing you to fully unplug and embrace the moment.
