Conquer Compassberg
Conquer Compassberg is a bold, summit-oriented 2-day, 3-night adventure by Slackpacking the Karoo, tailored for active, adrenaline-seeking hikers. It centers around the ascent of Compassberg (historically referred to by locals as “Spitskop”), a striking, compass-needle-like peak rising to 2 502 m, standing as the second highest free-standing mountain outside of the Drakensberg massif in South Africa.
From a scenic 1.5–2 hour transfer from our base camp at Ganora Farm just outside of Nieu-Bethesda, you’ll join our expert guide for a challenging 4–5 hour steep hike (weather and group fitness dependant). On a clear day, the panoramic summit views stretch for miles – encompassing distant horizons and the village far below. There, you can leave your mark in our summit booklet—a personal signature to commemorate having conquered Compassberg.

Natural & Cultural Riches
Compassberg isn’t just a climb—it’s a wildlife and geological gem. The peak anchors the unique Compassberg Protected Environment, safeguarding a vital water catchment area and sustaining rivers feeding towns like Nieu-Bethesda and Graaff-Reinet. The slopes host endemic biodiversity, including the rare Compassberg Skolly butterfly, found nowhere else.
The mountain—once dubbed “Spitskop” and later renamed by explorer Colonel Robert Jacob Gordon in 1778 during a journey with Governor van Plettenberg—commands not only geography, but history. The region’s geology, featuring Beaufort Series sediments intruded by dolerite, adds a dramatic, textured backdrop to the journey.
Adaptive Itinerary for Weather Conditions
We define adventure with flexibility: if weather grounds the climb (e.g., summit blanketed in cloud), we pivot to a scenic game drive with picnic, then let you explore the village’s creative spirit. The package includes all meals, accommodation, transfers, guiding, packed lunches – and the option to climb on day one or two depending on weather conditions.

Village of Nieu-Bethesda
Nieu-Bethesda, is a Karoo village born in 1875 as a church settlement and rising to municipal status by 1886. Tucked in a narrow valley under the Sneeuberge, the village breathes the spirit of the past with untarred streets, ancient pear trees, and a still-running system of water furrows that provide a soothing soundtrack.
Nieu-Bethesda’s heritage is rich—home to Helen Martins’s Owl House, an outsider-art museum full of vibrant cement and glass sculptures, and James Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, which reflects the region’s paleontological legacy. It’s a place where creativity, solitude, and ancient history meet under clear velvet skies
Situated close to the farm, it is ideal to explore during your free time before and after the hike. Read more here.
