Your base whilst conquering Compassberg is Asemskep Guest Farm, a working sheep farm steeped in the quiet rhythms and wide-open spirit of the Karoo. Located on the farm Heydon, approximately 40 km outside Middelburg (Eastern Cape) along the scenic Richmond gravel road, Asemskep sits in the shadow of the Sneeuberg range with the Compassberg – the second highest peak in the Eastern Cape – rising as a constant, magnificent backdrop.

Tucked into a landscape of vast Karoo plains, scrubland, and mountain ridges, the farm is alive with birdsong, roaming kudu, and the unhurried pace of country life. Two scenic routes thread through the neighbouring Sneeuberg Nature Reserve, connecting guests to the beloved village of Nieu-Bethesda and the famous Owl House — making Asemskep a natural stopping point on this storied stretch of the Karoo interior.

Asemskep is a working sheep farm, and guests are welcome to soak in that reality – from the sight of sheep moving across the veld to the chance to assist with shearing, depending on the season. It is a place where the land tells its own story, and where simply being present feels like enough.

Accommodation is housed in a beautiful old farmhouse, wrapped in lush vegetation and set within a generous garden where children can roam freely and adults can simply breathe. Inside, the farmhouse sleeps up to 12 guests across four bedrooms, two bathrooms (one en suite), a sun room, and an open-plan living area complete with a fireplace and indoor braai. The kitchen is fully equipped with a breakfast counter – perfect for slow mornings before a big day on the mountain.

There is no cell phone reception and no television. What there is, is silence, stars, and the sound of sheep in the distance – which, as guests have noted, will likely convince you to stay far longer than you planned.
