Karoo Mini Camino

The Karoo Mini Camino is a self-guided three-day, 50km slackpacking journey set around the iconic village of Nieu-Bethesda – designed for those who feel the pull of the Karoo but are looking for a more accessible way to experience it.  It offers something equally valuable: the space to slow down, to absorb, and to move through one of South Africa’s most striking landscapes at a pace that allows you to truly be present. Ancient plains, the ever-present silhouette of Compassberg, and a silence that feels full rather than empty – this is the Karoo at its most personal.

About the Karoo Mini Camino

There is a particular kind of magic found in the Karoo – expansive yet deeply personal, ancient yet quietly alive. The Karoo Mini Camino was created for those who feel the pull of this landscape but are looking for a more accessible way to begin, or simply don’t have the time for the full 100km journey.

Set around the iconic village of Nieu-Bethesda, this three-day slackpacking experience covers approximately 50 kilometres through some of the most striking terrain in South Africa. Shorter in distance, but no less rich in experience – in many ways, it offers something even more valuable: the space to slow down, absorb, and truly be present.

Throughout your journey, Compassberg anchors the horizon – the second-highest peak in the Eastern Cape, part of the dramatic Sneeuberg Mountain Range. Its presence shifts in perspective as you walk, constant and grounding. In the colder months, a dusting of snow on its summit adds a quietly spectacular dimension to the experience.

Underfoot, ancient plains stretch outward, dotted with low Karoo scrub that releases its subtle scent in the warmth of the day. The light shifts from pale, soft mornings to richly coloured sunsets that seem reluctant to fade. And then there is the silence – not empty, but full – the kind of stillness that allows you to hear your own thoughts again.

This is not a landscape that demands your attention. It quietly earns it.

The Nieu-Bethesda Connection

Nieu‑Bethesda, established in 1875 around fertile river valleys of the Gats River, grew from farmland to a bustling village ruling as a municipality by 1886 . Its agricultural success—as a hub for sheep, wheat, and barley—laid the foundation for today’s flourishing community.

Though it declined mid‑20th century, it made a vibrant comeback through farm-based tourism, filled with artisans and creatives drawn to its tranquillity and timeless beauty.

Today, Nieu‑Bethesda thrives thanks to local farms, heritage venues like the Owl House, and attractions including the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre. Situated close to the farm, it is ideal to explore during your free time before and after the hike.  Read more here.
