A New Way to Experience the Karoo

There is something about the Karoo that calls people back – not loudly, but persistently. It is found in the stillness, in the texture of the land, and in the way time seems to stretch just enough for you to breathe again.

For those who have felt that pull but believed they didn’t have the time, we are proud to introduce the Karoo Mini Camino – a three-day slackpacking trail set in and around Nieu-Bethesda.

Covering approximately 50 kilometres, this new route offers a shorter, more accessible Camino experience without compromising on depth, beauty, or meaning.

What is the Karoo Mini Camino?

The Karoo Mini Camino is a fully supported slackpacking trail designed for modern travellers who want to immerse themselves in nature, without the pressure of extreme distances or complicated logistics.

Over three days, walkers journey through working sheep farms, ancient Karoo terrain, and into one of South Africa’s most iconic villages. With luggage transfers, meals, and accommodation all taken care of, you are free to focus on the simple, powerful rhythm of walking.

This is not a race.

It is an experience.

Why Choose a Shorter Camino?

Not everyone has the luxury of taking a full week away – and not everyone wants to. The Karoo Mini Camino was created for those who want a meaningful escape within a shorter timeframe.

At 50km, it is ideal for:

  • First-time Camino walkers
  • Busy professionals looking for a reset
  • Couples, friends, and families wanting a shared experience
  • Anyone seeking a manageable, yet deeply rewarding walking journey

What makes this trail special is not just its accessibility, but the quality of the experience. With a more relaxed pace, you have time to engage with the landscape, connect with fellow walkers, and truly absorb your surroundings.

Conquer Compassberg - Slackpacking the Karoo

Walking in the Shadow of Compassberg

One of the defining features of this route is the ever-present Compassberg, the second-highest peak in the Eastern Cape and part of the dramatic Sneeuberg Mountain Range.

As you walk, Compassberg anchors the horizon – sometimes distant, sometimes looming – creating a sense of continuity throughout the journey. In winter, its summit may even be dusted with snow, offering a rare and striking contrast to the warm tones of the Karoo below.

It is a landscape that feels both vast and intimate, where every step brings a shift in perspective.

Explore Nieu-Bethesda at a Slower Pace

Unlike longer trails where villages are often brief stopovers, the Karoo Mini Camino allows for meaningful time in Nieu-Bethesda.

Known for its artistic soul and unique character, the village offers a rich cultural layer to the journey. Visitors can explore the world-famous Owl House, browse local galleries and bookshops, or enjoy craft beer and Karoo-inspired cuisine at local establishments.

This additional time transforms the experience – allowing you to move beyond simply passing through, and instead become part of the rhythm of the village.

Fully Catered Karoo Experience

One of the highlights of the Karoo Mini Camino is the food.

Meals are thoughtfully prepared and deeply rooted in the region, from slow-cooked dishes on working farms to memorable dining experiences in the village. Each meal reflects the essence of the Karoo – generous, honest, and full of flavour.

Combined with comfortable accommodation and seamless logistics, this creates a true slackpacking experience, where everything is taken care of and your only responsibility is to walk.

Accommodation along the Route

Accommodation on the Karoo Mini Camino is carefully selected to reflect both the authenticity and comfort of the region. Along the way, you will stay on two working sheep farms – Kareelaagte Guest Farm and Ganora Guest Farm — as well as in a welcoming guesthouse in Nieu-Bethesda.

Kareelaagte offers a grounded introduction to Karoo farm life, while Ganora brings an added layer of history and intrigue, with its Bushman rock art and private fossil museum offering insight into the ancient story of this landscape. Your time in the village is spent in a spacious, relaxed guesthouse setting, allowing you to unwind and enjoy the unique character of Nieu-Bethesda.

All accommodation is comfortable and thoughtfully prepared, with hot water, electricity, quality beds, and clean linen provided throughout. While the settings are authentic and unpretentious, they offer everything you need to rest and recharge after each day on the trail.
